Artichoke by olivetreeann

Artichoke

When I was a little girl my mother would buy artichokes and steam them. Then she would melt some butter and we would break off the warm artichoke leaves and dip them in the butter. We'd be careful to eat the tasty part of the leaf and not the bitter part. It always seemed like such a grown up way to eat a vegetable! I went to the supermarket today thinking it would be fun to buy 2 artichokes for dinner tonight. Boy was I surprised at how expensive they were! Needless to say, I did not purchase them, but I did pull out my point and shoot and take a picture of them! Since I had to do this quickly (one run in with an authority figure per month is my quota) it wasn't the shot I really wanted, by the Impressionist painting effect in BeFunky turned it into an artsy shot after all.
Cool

I have also enjoyed artichokes that way, and they are delicious. Funny that the same thing happened to me today, went to the supermarket and the price was so expensive that i just admired them. Your shot came out very nice.

never had that but sounds good.

Not a big fan of artichokes, like the photo and post processing.

Great textures and color!

i love artichoke, but sadly i can only have the preserved or canned ones. we don't grow artichoke in the old country so i never got to learn how to prepare it, along with leeks. very nice processing and it did make the artichokes look nice. artichoke rocks!

Gorgeous ... another fantastic photo processed by "Ann!"

A great shot, but sorry you couldn't relive those memories
April 19th, 2012
Great processing! How would you get in trouble taking a photo of artichokes? lol

I saw a bunch of these at the farmer's market today and thought it might not be easy to get a good shot of that shape ... nicely done.

nice one

The processing is perfect for this pic :) I hope you get to have some artichokes for tea soon! :)

Great processing on this shot. They are cheap to buy here and when in season we eat them very often. My wife just loves them.
April 19th, 2012
Really cool textures! I have had them once boiled and eaten that way and I loved it! I think they are more affordable in the summer, maybe you should wait for it.
April 19th, 2012
Great textured photo. Long tome since have eaten that way.
April 19th, 2012
Wonderful textures and great processing Ann. Good memories you have.

@tklein lol Tina- I was falling asleep when I was typing my thanks and never answered your question. Some managers get nervous that your photographing the security measures and such. I try to be discreet when I take a picture in a store just so I don't draw undue attention. Or sometimes I will just ask someone if it's ok.
@beachradish Thanks Beachradish! I would have preferred an individual shot but I had to do it quickly. That can sometimes actually work in your favor because you can't over analyze the shot. It forces me to pick out what I think is the essence of the subject and snap- in this case it was the pattern the leaves make in forming the shape of the artichoke. Since I did it so quickly, the shot was slightly blurry so I opted for some processing to remove it, but if I had my druthers I'd have put them in natural lighting and done the same shot without processing.
@steeler Thanks Howard!
@alia_801 Thanks Alia! I don't know if I'd have them with tea, but I am going to see if they ever go on sale and then get some for the fun of having them again.
@sangwann Thanks Dione- they may not be in season yet which is why they were pricey- so I'll wait and see if they become more affordable.
@geertje Thanks Geertje- you're right, I'm waiting to see if in the summer I might be able to get some.
@peterdegraaff Thanks Peter!
@nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole! I do have good memories! I'm blessed!

That is a very nice artsy shot too! I love the little stories you tell with your pics.

@annaluceya Thank you Anna! I'm so glad you enjoy them. I love to tell stories!

@olivetreeann You're good at it too and it adds a realy nice personal touch to your pictures - brings them alive.

wow, love it.... well done!

Cool pic... nice processing... I've never had artichoke before... I'm a brussel sprout girl myself :)
April 19th, 2012
Cool processing. I love artichokes. Generally I just buy them quartered in the can. I would like to try the natural way some time though. Very popular with Italian families.
April 19th, 2012
Nice processing, my mum cooked them the same way, I have never tried as my cooking skills leave a little bit to be desired lol
April 19th, 2012
@annaluceya Thank you again Anna!
@mhatch Thank you Mark!
@prttblues Thank you Bev! I love brussel sprouts too!
@cimes1 Thank you Carole. I don't think it's that hard- it's just a matter of steaming them for the proper amount of time. I use a pressure cooker, but they scare some folks! You can probably find everything you need to know about cooking them on line!
@melorac Thank you Carole! I think you can do it! Start with something simpler like carrots first. (o:

Thanks, Ann. I know how to prepare them just don't want to take the extra time for just the 2 of us. My inlaws (former husband) were Italian and used to make them for big occasions. Yummy!
April 22nd, 2012
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I LOVE artichokes! love the grainy green of this.
April 28th, 2012
@crickle1969 thanks Chrystal. I took it rather quickly in the store so there was a slight blur to contend with- therefore processing to the rescue!
April 28th, 2012
Great photo! I love artichokes, too, but we haven't had any for awhile because of the price.
May 8th, 2012
@eudora Thanks Diane- yes they were just too pricey to bring home, so a store shot it was.
