When I was a little girl my mother would buy artichokes and steam them. Then she would melt some butter and we would break off the warm artichoke leaves and dip them in the butter. We'd be careful to eat the tasty part of the leaf and not the bitter part. It always seemed like such a grown up way to eat a vegetable! I went to the supermarket today thinking it would be fun to buy 2 artichokes for dinner tonight. Boy was I surprised at how expensive they were! Needless to say, I did not purchase them, but I did pull out my point and shoot and take a picture of them! Since I had to do this quickly (one run in with an authority figure per month is my quota) it wasn't the shot I really wanted, by the Impressionist painting effect in BeFunky turned it into an artsy shot after all.
I have also enjoyed artichokes that way, and they are delicious. Funny that the same thing happened to me today, went to the supermarket and the price was so expensive that i just admired them. Your shot came out very nice.
i love artichoke, but sadly i can only have the preserved or canned ones. we don't grow artichoke in the old country so i never got to learn how to prepare it, along with leeks. very nice processing and it did make the artichokes look nice. artichoke rocks!
Really cool textures! I have had them once boiled and eaten that way and I loved it! I think they are more affordable in the summer, maybe you should wait for it.
@tklein lol Tina- I was falling asleep when I was typing my thanks and never answered your question. Some managers get nervous that your photographing the security measures and such. I try to be discreet when I take a picture in a store just so I don't draw undue attention. Or sometimes I will just ask someone if it's ok. @beachradish Thanks Beachradish! I would have preferred an individual shot but I had to do it quickly. That can sometimes actually work in your favor because you can't over analyze the shot. It forces me to pick out what I think is the essence of the subject and snap- in this case it was the pattern the leaves make in forming the shape of the artichoke. Since I did it so quickly, the shot was slightly blurry so I opted for some processing to remove it, but if I had my druthers I'd have put them in natural lighting and done the same shot without processing. @steeler Thanks Howard! @alia_801 Thanks Alia! I don't know if I'd have them with tea, but I am going to see if they ever go on sale and then get some for the fun of having them again. @sangwann Thanks Dione- they may not be in season yet which is why they were pricey- so I'll wait and see if they become more affordable. @geertje Thanks Geertje- you're right, I'm waiting to see if in the summer I might be able to get some. @peterdegraaff Thanks Peter! @nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole! I do have good memories! I'm blessed!
Cool processing. I love artichokes. Generally I just buy them quartered in the can. I would like to try the natural way some time though. Very popular with Italian families.
@annaluceya Thank you again Anna! @mhatch Thank you Mark! @prttblues Thank you Bev! I love brussel sprouts too! @cimes1 Thank you Carole. I don't think it's that hard- it's just a matter of steaming them for the proper amount of time. I use a pressure cooker, but they scare some folks! You can probably find everything you need to know about cooking them on line! @melorac Thank you Carole! I think you can do it! Start with something simpler like carrots first. (o:
Thanks, Ann. I know how to prepare them just don't want to take the extra time for just the 2 of us. My inlaws (former husband) were Italian and used to make them for big occasions. Yummy!
