Awesome August 9

During the 1950's it was thought that the rings had ancient Greek origins. That supposition was inadvertently started by two British authors, Lynn and Gray Poole, who mistakenly identified a stone bearing a carving of the rings in Delphi, Greece as one that was associated with the Pythian Games which were held there in ancient times. But the truth was that the stone had been placed there in 1936 when Carl Diem, an Olympic organizer for the Berlin Games, decided to have a ceremony in the stadium at Delphi whereupon a torch bearer would then bring the torch from Delphi to Berlin. A milestone marker was carved with the rings and placed there for the ceremony but it was never removed. This has become known as "Carl Diem's Stone" since that time. The rings were featured prominently in the Berlin Games as part of an effort to glorify the Third Reich.
Very cool

I love the way you are bringing the history and the photos together, Ann - the stone texture is just great. . .
August 9th, 2012
great job with the narrative tying into the photo!

I love your historical explanations along with your pictures.

Funny, I kept reading his name as Carpe Diem, which might be why no-one touched his stone?
August 9th, 2012
I agree with Dixie ... I kept reading (or thinking of) Carpe Diem also! Great info ... and once again, the processing is magnificent.

@cimes1 @httpgeffed @mrssmith @nadaa @lyno @kaseycarroll @henrir @pandorasecho @karenann @wenbow

Thank you Carole, Colleen, Carla, Nada, Lyn, Kasey (thanks for the view and comment!), Henri, Dixie, Karenann and Wendy!

I do so appreciate your comments! Yes, I found Mr. Diem's name slightly unusual too! This commentary did seem to go well with today's color: black. To get this effect, I first played with the adjustable threshhold to bring out more black and lessen the white balance. I then used the "Night Vision" effect in Ribbert to add those green accents you see.

the grainy texture is perfect

@crickle1969 Thanks Chrystal!

Cool processing. This image is so different than the others. Great history information. I never had the clue about this part of the circles history.

@daisy Thanks Kathryn! It's still the same star/heart mold of the previous days, but the reason why it looks so different is that the processing took out the contrast and shape. The silver shot and the yellow shot are of the top of the mold. The blue and black shots are the opposite side (the bottom so to speak). In the blue shot, the mold was slanted upwards and towards the camera. This shot is taken looking straight down on to the mold (although you can't really tell that because it is so dark).

@maggiemae Thanks Maggiemae- I was looking at this shot again, and I think it was the Autotrophic effect and not the Night Vision one- I can't remember now!!

You're doing such a great job explaining all of the history behind the Olympic symbols and rings. Thank you for that, as I'm sure we're all learning a lot this week. Great and unusual processing on this one, Ann.

Thank you both and my apologies for taking so long to respond. I was supposed to be able to get on line while I was in Boston, but my friend's laptop decided not to cooperate! So I am just now catching up with all the comments! I will also be slowly going through all the projects and photos I missed so bear with me!
