We received good news yesterday that Punxatawney Phil did not see his shadow, so Spring will come early. Well, looks like Mother Nature got the memo as it was almost 60 degrees today. But it was also gray and drizzly. I looked at it as another opportunity to see what the histogram would have to say about the lighting and I guessed that the reading would be mostly in the middle rather than the U-shaped reading Batdorff strives for. I was correct! Maybe I'm starting to understand this after all. Knowing that I'd be dealing with a black and white that was mostly mid-tones put me in search of a pattern that had at least one or two distinct light and dark spots. The woods behind my house had a light mist going through them and the tree trunks were wet with the daily drizzle. I knew they'd be the perfect subjects for today's Flash of Red Shot. While I was tempted to add more contrast in when I was post-processing, I decided to keep the picture as closely mid-tone as possible, which in turn rendered the image pretty much like I'd seen it when I took the picture. While mid-tones are not supposed to be favorable to keeping detail, I was really impressed with the way the leaf-covered forest floor ended up looking.
Oh, I can't thank you all enough for both the positive feedback and the favs! I have grown to really like this shot even though at first I thought it to be quite typical! But there's something about that bent fallen-over tree there that makes it different to me. Well, you've all out-done yourselves with kindness! Thanks again!!
@kandkids Thank you Karen! It was just one of those days that everything fell into place (even though the histogram remained elusive!). @beachdog Thank you Barb!
Lovely mid tones and mist!
