Three things I learned while attempting to meet the panning challenge on the current ONS.
1) My little point and shoot really does not like to pan. It either blurs everything or puts it all in focus.
2) I am not very good at panning either because...
3) It's very hard to wind up a toy car, set it on a course with one hand and take steady photos with the other.
At one point I just sat on the floor and laughed at how ridiculous and impossible this task was. Needless to say even processing does not rescue this one. Even so, it was fun to at least try it.
@digitalrn Thank you Rick- for both comments tonight. It's ok. It's one of those things that I knew might work if I had a place to go and take shots of cars or something, but my main goal today was to get my writing done, so I was a bit housebound.
@lyno It's short for One Night Stand. There are 7 different shots, one on each day of the week- and it just lasts for that one week. I'll look up the link for you.
@lyno It's currently listed under general discussions- hot topics (one of those) on the right hand side of the dashboard. But you can also find it this way: 365project.org/discuss/general/14432/one-night-stand-too.
I think its cute and makes a good photo! A P& S is difficult to hold steady - I tuck my camera close to my chest for the very little panning I've done - keen to do more, though!
I like this! from my past experiences on panning shots: manual setting is a must and pre-focus is a good idea... In general doing panning is not easy at all and takes lots of rubbish pictures before you got a decent one!
Thank you so much everyone! You are so encouraging and I'm so glad you got as many chuckles out of this one as I did. I have learned that if you can't laugh at yourself once in a while, you'll end up being a candidate for an ulcer. So, rather than scream at the camera, I just had fun with it. Someday when I get my big girl camera, I will try this again, but for now, I'll stick to things the camera likes to take.
I don't even know what a panning shot is... But it looks like you captured the motion of the little car well. I like it. Sounds like you had a hard job taking this shot. You did great!
@prttblues Thanks Bev- panning is following a moving object with the camera. The object (such as a race car) stays in focus while the background blurs (such as the track or the crowd watching the race). It was hard only because my camera is a lower end of the scale p & s. It does not really have the capability to "read" that kind of picture. It either focuses on the whole scene, or blurs the whole scene. But I did discover that if I raised the ISO, I sort of got the panning I was looking for. I think there's probably a way to make this work in my camera, but it will take some reading the manual to find out how.
@wenbow Oh thank you Wendy! I think this shot is awful! I bought the little car last October for another 365 challenge but now feel better at having purchased it since I've used it twice!
