Step 1. Load your photo into a photo processing program. If you don't have one, there are several sites that offer basic programs for free or on a trial basis. Picmonkey used to be available here on 365 but with the disappearance of Adobe Flash, you now have to sign up for it off-site. Ribbet is another processing program which is very easy to use like Picmonkey and that is what I used here. Adjust the sharpness and contrast to your before the next step if you feel you need to. (First picture)
2. In your photo processing program's effects apply the black and white effect to your COLOR shot. You have to start with a color picture for Selective Coloring to work.
(Please note the above picture does not contain red! It was just an easy shot to work with for this demonstration. You are not obligated to use red for your selective coloring shot, but I think it looks the best when you look at the calendar at the end of the month hence the title Flash of Red.)
3. You have the option to apply a color filter over your black and white conversion by using the cursor and sliding it over the colors in the filter box in Ribbet. Other programs probably allow you to do this as well. Experiment with this option- some color filters actually increase the contrast (I find that red, blue and green usually work the best).
4. Select effect painting; or erase (depending on how your program defines it) and bring back the color on your subject by running the cursor over it. When you're satisfied with the result hit apply to save the results. (Pictures 2 and 3)
5. Put an additional pop in the color of your picture by adding saturation or vibrance if you want. Otherwise save the photo and post it on 365.
You'll have to wait until the end of the month to really see how this makes your photo stand out but I promise that Flash of Red is really fun to see in the middle of all that black and white. (Picture 4)
I haven’t searched out a link but if someone really wants to see there should be several threads showing the final results from past years. You are really good at teaching.

I'm always glad to help. I still remember my first attempts at this- they were not so good! But now, it's a fun effect when not overdone.
