Balancing Act by onewing

Balancing Act

This morning I went out with Nicki to take some photos. As we were walking around the marina and along the beach I told her that last week I saw a rock balancing on another rock just where we were walking. I couldn't believe that it was just balancing there and I touched it and of course it dropped. I could have spit that I hadn't taken a photo of it first.

So today as we were talking about it, I saw the same rock on the ground and thought I would have a go at balancing it on the large rock again myself. This is the result. How good is that!!!

I thought I had better take a photo of it before it fell off again though.

The rock is about 30 cm high (12 inches) and quite heavy so I was pleased that I managed to balance it. Didn't attempt to balance another rock on top of this one though which would have been really really good!!!

Today is the first day of winter and a beautiful day around 20 degrees at the moment.

If you hadn't told me the size, I would have thought the rock was fairly big !! Its really cold here, wet and grey. I was just outside taking photos of rain and I can tell you it really is cold and winter is here.

Wow Babs, that looks brilliant, like Jo said it looks bigger in the photo than it actually was. Brilliant!

This is astonishing! Do they have magnetic properties? Super balancing act! Your Winter is much warmer than our late Spring!!

@joluise Fairly big!! I nearly gave myself a hernia lifting this one!!! I think we are going to get rain soon. It is still pretty warm for this time of year but the sky has clouded over now.

@winnedreamer Turned out well hasn't it. I'm really pleased that I got it to balance, after wrecking the other person's efforts!!

@rhos Thanks Ann. No it doesn't have magnetic properties. According to my husband (who is interested in geology) This rock and all the others you can see are ignimbrite which is volcanic ash bonded together. The hill behind these rocks was a volcano and this was a result of the lava flow.

I think our winter will kick in pretty soon, but we are making the most of the warm weather at the moment. I haven't even lit our woodburner fire for the last couple of nights!!

It actually looks like a huge bolder! Great balancing and great shot, the detail and colours are great Babs.

@bugsy Thanks Heather. Wet here in Port Stephens today too.

@paulaw Probably looks bigger because I was close to it when I took the photo, but it didn't look right taken from further away. It was certainly heavy enough lifting it!!!

@elaine55 @gamelee Thanks Elaine and Lee. It did look bigger when I looked at the photo, but when I took it, it didn't look right taken from further away. I would love to get another boulder balancing on top of this one, but I reckon it was a fluke that I got this one to balance on the slanted rock beneath it!!!!
