The Rising Sun by onewing

The Rising Sun

As I mentioned yesterday I am getting back into family history and have been organizing my folders and photos before updating my records and writing the story.

The Rising Sun pub along with the three adjoining terrace houses was built by my great great grandfather on my Dad's side of the family in 1876.

Joseph's father worked as a stone mason and owned a quarry in the same village which is, I suspect, where the Yorkshire stone came from to build this pub and houses.

This photo was taken by Jenny, a second cousin of mine, about 20 years ago when she visited the UK. Jenny lives about 60 km from me here in Australia and we only got in touch after we both started tracing family history. We share the same great great grandfather so I have been able to get lots of information from her.

After he built the pub great great grandfather Joseph Hill lived there as the innkeeper for 13 years until his death of tuberculosis at the age of 56. Three of his adult children lived in the adjoining houses.

After his death my great great grandmother Emma sold the pub and moved into one of the adjoining houses where she lived until her death.
I'm reading all this with great pleasure! And how fun that your second cousin lives so close, especially taken into consideration that your roots are in the UK!

Great story! I, too, have connected with several second cousins through Ancestry. My other's maiden name was Hill.

@ankers70 Interesting, maybe we are related, ha ha. Joseph's brother Henry came to Australia in 1855 and then Joseph's daughter came here in 1885. She was an interesting one because she came here as Sarah Hoyland which was her married name. Her husband didn't like it here so he returned to the UK. Eventually Sarah married a chap also called Hill in Melbourne and married him as Sarah Hill spinster when in fact she was Sarah Hoyland so she was a bigamist.

@ludwigsdiana It takes a lot of patience and detective work but worth it, the stories are so interesting. I am sure you could trace your family history. It is so easy these days with so many search engines online. I use mainly Ancestry and Find My Past but I do use other resources too on occasion including the LDS site.

So interesting.

A wonderful phot to support all the research into your family history - great narrative .

What a family history! I thought the name was after the very popular song of the 60's, The House of The Rising Sun - a favourite of mine in those days - but it came earlier than the song. Thank you for sharing.

Loving that bit of history and I had to look twice at first because I thought "this can't be Babs, it isn't at all Australian looking!"

My Hill side came from Wales and didn't emigrate to Australia until just after WW2, but interesting nevertheless. @onewing

@annied @koalagardens @pusspup @jamibann @happysnaps @pamknowler @joansmor @wakelys @beryl @louannwarren @pcoulson @jacqbb @fishers @mittens @busylady @carolmw @denful @carole_sandford Thanks. It is a fascinating subject. In just over a weeks time the 1921 census is being released on Ancestry UK and I can't wait to update some of my records from that.

@sangwann I suspect this Rising Sun has a chequered history too. ha ha

@casablanca It was a tough life for them. Reight bleak on't moors

@happypat Thanks. I don't think the sun rose too often up here, it was rather bleak.

@ankers70 Keep up the family history. Always fascinating stories to find.

Wonderful history and scene

Such interesting history Babs!

@onewing You are lucky to have that photo. What is the LDS site? I also use Trove, but one of the most fruitful things I've used is to just do a Google search using husband's name and wife's maiden name. It is surprising what comes up at times. Yesterday I found a 30 page write up on my great great grandmother! Good luck with your family history - it really gets you in.
December 29th, 2021
@jeneurell It is the Latter Day Saints site. Just put International Genealogical Index or (IGI) into Google and it will take you to the site.
December 29th, 2021
Fantastic shot and love the history behind it!
December 29th, 2021
Awesome capture and very interesting history behind it.
December 29th, 2021
I love genealogy too…what a great photo and story.
December 29th, 2021
I think a lot of our history lies in the United Kingdom! So many people relate to these stories!

@onewing Thanks Babs.
