As I was walking along the breakwater in Nelson Bay I spotted this gull dive bombing the pelican on the light. There were more than a few harsh words between the two of them, but the gull eventually gave up and the pelican kept his perch.
Ha ha! Can't imagine the pelican would let a seagull have it! The gull obviously doesn't know it is only little! ( a bit like little dogs and big dogs!)
@beachdog I think your right Barb. The gulls have no idea of their size they are just so bossy. The pelicans sit on the lamp posts watching the people fishing on the breakwater and wait for their opportunity to get any left overs.
@pixiemac Ha ha. There were people standing under this light post too and didn't notice the pelican and gull until they spotted me taking a photo, so I think I probably saved them.
@mrsrcg Thanks Rachel. After our recent storms it is lovely to see blue skies again. It gets a bit chilly at night now though, as we come to the end of autumn and almost in winter.
@cruiser Thanks Chris. I was walking along the breakwater when I heard the din. The gull was squawking and the pelican was honking but the gull gave up in the end.
@princessliz The pelicans have figured out that this is a great vantage point along the breakwater because they can keep their eye on the people fishing and as soon as a fish is caught they get closer to pick up the left overs. No wonder our pelicans are so fat and tame.
@creampuff Thanks Eve. The gulls do try to outdo the pelicans, but very rarely win. There are a few one legged gulls in our area so I guess some have come off worse than others.
@happypat Thanks Pat. Glad it made you smile. They were making a hell of a racket. The pelican wasn't giving up his spot though. They always settle on the lights in the late afternoon. A great spot to watch the sun go down and also keep an eye on the people fishing too. They always manage to pick up bits of fish as the fishermen gut them.
@thimblelady@888rachel@fntngrma@sioux@eyesmile Thanks so much. I have just spotted that this is on the PP. That's two pictures in two days on the PP. I am on a roll. ha ha.
The pelicans always perch on the lights along the breakwater because they can keep their eyes on the people fishing and watch out for any throw away bits when the people gut their fish.
