I thought I'd better post a photo of the 'deceased' station just in case it disappears along with other areas of Newcastle. The rail lines have already been ripped up, but I really hope the station stays.
This is the closest I could get to it as it is all fenced off and I had to take this photo through a break in the mesh fence.
No Marnie @golftragic I didn't get arrested.
@golftragic As I said in the blurb, I didn't get arrested. You are a bad influence encouraging me to follow in your footsteps taking photos through breaks in mesh fences.
David wandered off and left me there though, just in case.
I hope the building is put another use. Why is the railway closed? This happened with Beaching in the 60s in GB & they are regretting it now.( You remember Dr Beaching)
It doesn't take a lot of imagination to think of a new use for the station building - I do hope that happens. Those lovely brick arches and station benches surely must stay!
@paulmann The railway has closed apparently because the line crossed the road twice between Hamilton and Newcastle and it blocked the traffic. So now the line stops at Hamilton and the stations of Wickham, Civic and Newcastle have been closed.
They are replacing it with a light rail (tram) which runs up the centre of the road from Hamilton to Newcastle, which of course won't affect car or bus traffic at all. There's logic for you.
If you put Newcastle NSW into Google maps you will see where the rail lines used to go.
I think the developers want to build high rise apartments, office blocks and trendy restaurants along the strip.
Yes I do remember Dr Beeching.
@ivan Thanks Ivan. I remember Beeching in the 60s. Thanks for the link. No chance of restoring this station, they have already ripped up the rail lines.
@golftragic Thanks Marnie, as I said you are a bad influence. I think the plan for the centre of Newcastle, unfortunately, is a lot of dog boxes. Light rail up the middle of the street and high rise apartment and office blocks 6, 7 8 and 9 storeys high.
@taffy Marnie is definitely a bad influence isn't she. I hope you will bake the cake with a file in it in case we both get arrested.
I will keep everyone informed as to what happens in Newcastle. I think the actual station building will survive, but apartment and office blocks will replace the actual rail line and a light rail will run up the middle of the street.
It would seem such a shame to pull this structure down. I love the ornateness of it - the beautiful decorated metal work, the brickwork and the arches of the windows, so much history there I think. Pity it couldn't be converted into a tourist information centre or something like that..
