We went to Boat Harbour this afternoon to do a spot of whale watching. I can't believe how many whales we saw today. We must have seen well over seventy whales in the time we were there.
They are all migrating north from Antarctica to give birth in warmer waters.
This is a screen grab of a video David took of the whales. You can see at least 6 whales in this pod and there were others under the water all coming up at different times.
Some were so close to the rocks we were standing on. Just goes to show you don't have to go out on a boat to actually see the whales.
I haven't had time yet to look at my photos as I am just about to get dinner ready.
How fortunate. You were there at the perfect time. I saw one whale one time and was thrilled with that. Great picture. I don't think I've ever even seen a picture of a pod of whales. Thanks. fav.
@bugsy Hi Heather. I have never seen so many whales at Boat Harbour before. They really put on a show for us. So many pods and some came really close to the rocks.
I was talking to a woman who was recording the whales and she said she counted 140 in the 3 hours she was there.
Fantastic sight Babs. I was reading in the paper that the number of humpbacks has risen dramatically which is pleasing to see. Blues are scarce though.
@taffy Of course, we would have got better shots if we had been out on a boat, but from the shore I think we did pretty well. I was amazed just how many whales we saw. @golftragic It is just humpbacks that come up the coast here I think.
@onewing If I recall the article correctly, the humpbacks are the early birds, minkes and something else (southern right) come a bit later and blues very rarely.
@jorlam They really put on a show for us. We saw so many whales from Boat Harbour. Didn't need to go out in a boat. David is much safer on land, he isn't a very good sailor.
