We stumble across an occasional red telephone box, usually in some tiny village where residents don't turn into vandals when darkness falls. Were even came across one which had been turned into a book sharing library - I have a picture somewhere 😊😊
What an interesting well ventilated telephone box well spotted Babs, there are still a few about in the UK a row in Preston are all still working today, see shot posted in 2014 https://365project.org/pcoulson/365/2014-02-04
A lovely reminder of youth !! -- my brother in law in N Wales ,purchased one on their decline in the UK and now has it standing proudly in the back garden - a nice feature !!
Great find - few youngsters - I bet. Someone in a village close to here has a red one. Hull has its own telephone company and all theirs were cream rather than the traditional red and became somewhat of a collectors item when they were sold off. The metal ones are not a patch on the wooden ones.
You seem to have a lot of North country names in your part of the world. I presume this is not the Morpeth in the UK? Some of our old telephone kiosks have been given another life - used as swapping libraries for second hand books.
Not many phone boxes left, fewer still with phones in! I saw one today that had been turned into a cashpoint machine and another that is an internet access point. How times have changed :)
@littleconnie It has seen better days hasn't it. @paul10 Thanks Paul. Morpeth is such a tiny village, population about 900 people so I think the telephone box is safe from vandals. @fbailey I think it is quite old. Our telephone boxes seem to be different to the red iconic UK ones. @pcoulson It would have to be ventilated Peter. Morpeth temperatures in summer can get up to over 40 degrees C @happysnaps Memories indeed Valerie. @beryl How lovely to have a telephone box in the garden @louisanoffke Ha ha. I didn't go inside so no idea if it was bigger inside than out. I will check it out next time I go to Morpeth. I could end up in some distant planet. @happypat A lot of our places are named after their UK counterparts because the area reminds them of 'home' I have never been to Morpeth in the UK, so no idea how it compares.
@mandygravil Interesting that Hull had cream telephone boxes. @busylady We did pinch some of your place names. Our early settlers often named places because they reminded them of home.
No this isn't in the UK as you say, it is in Morpeth, New south Wales. Population 900 people, so probably a lot smaller than the UK Morpeth. @inthecloud5 Morpeth is a historic village and popular with tourists, so I think they try to keep a lot of its original features. @kathiecb I don't think we have ever had that many pay phones in Australia even in their hay days.
Where's Clark Kent??? I miss the old phone boxes. Back in my youth, ie the Ice Ages, the Girl Guides insisted we all carry tuppence for the phone as part of our 'be prepared' stuff.
Can you imagine if for some reason mobile phones stopped working today. People would have to look at and converse with the person sat at the same table as them in the cafe or restaurant, they would also be looking in front of themselves when crossing the road or walking toward you.
Best of all we'd have to go out of the house with the correct change, walk to the nearest phone box, then wait in line to make a phone call.
The red boxes that are still there are great reminder. Good shot Babs.
@gamelee Ha ha interesting comment Lee. We were out for dinner last week for our wedding anniversary and sitting at the next table were a very young couple and they were both on their mobile phones while they were eating, sad really isn't it.
