In Between Newcastle by onewing

In Between Newcastle

I am posting a bit earlier than usual today. We have just got home as we have been out with our walking group and then out for lunch, so I think I need a quiet afternoon.

So far this week I have posted photos of old Newcastle and new Newcastle so here is in between Newcastle.

This building is the Council administration centre and was built in 1977. The Council offices are now being moved to the west side of Newcastle so I believe this building is now up for sale.

It is known colloquially as The Wedding Cake, The Roundhouse, The Shuttlecock and The Champagne Cork. I think I prefer the champagne cork, but whatever it is I am not so keen on the architecture. What is it they say about the 1970s - the decade that taste forgot.
champagne cork fits for me too - and I think that's where that shape belongs hahaha in a bottle

It is very like a giant water tower....
May 16th, 2019
@robz I think the same! Like the water tower in the Thomas the Tank Engine stories :)

@casablanca Lol - I've started watching that again - had a bit of trouble remembering their names - it was 30 odd years ago. Vinny loves it! :)

@robz A kid with taste! We still love it all here :) Hubby read them as a kid and so did the teenager. Super stuff

A Champagne cork perhaps , but to me a giant dove-cote !! A love-hate sort of building ! (as long as it is NOT on my doorstep !)

...time for a nap

Certainly different Babs, it does catch the light well emphasizing its shape a patterns, for me I would say the Champagne Cork fits well:)

A dramatic building for sure! Not sure it’s my “cup of tea” or “glass of champagne “!
May 16th, 2019
it is an odd one isn't it. Don't think I like it much either!
May 16th, 2019
That is one ugly building!
May 16th, 2019
Original architecture bu not my type of building. A good shot notwithstanding.
May 16th, 2019
Great shot of this corky building.
May 16th, 2019
My my what a great building. I prefer the champagne cork moniker as well!
May 16th, 2019
You have captured this building really well and given viewers an excellent idea of the architecture. It certainly is an unusual style.
May 16th, 2019
What a great building.

Amazing building
May 16th, 2019
Lovely shot and such an interesting looking building.
May 16th, 2019
Interesting architecture
May 16th, 2019
I like it strangely....a neat building with style & punch!
May 16th, 2019
Interesting and unusual architecture. Nice shot.
May 16th, 2019
Great building! Looks a bit like a beehive!
May 16th, 2019
Well, it's certainly striking. As Jacqueline says above, my thought was a beehive too.
May 16th, 2019
Whatever you make of it, it certainly does make an impact and far too few buildings do that around here nowadays.
May 16th, 2019
I think its rather nice - no sides and views out every window!
May 16th, 2019
Funny- I'm not usually fond of the more modern architecture, but this one I like-! Good shot.
May 17th, 2019
Cool architecture!

@annied @robz @beryl @peterday @pcoulson @carole_sandford @pusspup @peadar @sangwann @ludwigsdiana @louannwarren @adayinmallacoota @merrelyn @angelar @mittens @carolmw @happypat @susiemc @jacqbb @flowerfairyann @helenhall @maggiemae @olivetreeann @loweygrace Thanks, there are a few more suggestions as to what this building looks like and they include a beehive, a water tower and a dove cote. All seem to fit the bill.

I have just discovered that when the Council staff move to Stewart Avenue, the 'champagne cork' will be transformed into a 5 star 136 room hotel and should be completed in November 2020.

@onewing Sounds like a great idea, maybe it will then be perked up a bit ;-)
May 17th, 2019
I like 'champagne cork', works best for me.
May 17th, 2019
Great shot. However, the building is a bit scary.
May 17th, 2019
Great news - I thought yesterday -it would make a great hotel !
May 17th, 2019
Such an ugly building!
