When we were out for a walk a few days ago we came across this huge flower. I have no idea what variety it is but I took the photo, with David's hand next to it. David has big hands and the flower is bigger than his hand.
@shutterbug49 Thanks so much Debbie for identifying it for me. It was huge and I thought it must be some kind of lily but never seen one quite like this before.
@julzmaioro didn't notice any perfume I was too busy getting David to hold his hand next to it to show the size. I will have to go back and then let you know
The day of the triffids , comes to mind !! Well done for giving us a comparison of size -- such a beauty , and well done Debbie @shutterbug49 for identifying it for us !
Great idea to use David's hand to show the size of the flower. At Independence Garden in Sliema (Malta) there is a tree that reaches some three storeys high with flowers just like this. I don't know the name of it either.
That is a big flower with a cool 6-pointed star in the center. We got this APP called Seek and it helps to identify unknown flowers, trees, insects, etc.
My phone app ( plant snap) came up with Solandra maxima. Cup of gold vine. The photo it gave was exactly like yours. It also said. Solandra longiflora.
They both identified it as Solandra Maxima also known as Hawaiian Lily, cup of gold vine and golden chalice vine.
I have another one that we need identifying while we were on the same walk too and I will post that one today.
@sangwann Thanks. The tree you mentioned in your comment at the Independence Garden, Sliema is huge, hope you can identify it one day. Sounds like Jack and the Beanstalk type tree ha ha. Hope the giant doen't climb down it.
Wow- David's hand really does add an amazing point of reference for the size of this bloom. All I could have offered was that it looked like some sort of lily or trumpet vine, but Debbie as able to zero in on its true identity. Not only is 365 good for inspirational photos, it's its own encyclopedia as well! Great shot.
