My Favourite House by onewing

My Favourite House

Today's black and white photo is of my favourite house.

Whenever we go shopping in Newcastle we pass this house and I think it is beautiful. If it was at Nelson Bay I would buy it.

Apparently it is called Winahra and was built in 1890 by William Arnott of Arnott's biscuits fame, who built it for his daughter and her husband Isaac Winn.

Today's main album photo

it is beautiful - lots of cleaning maintenance and stairs which would take away from photo time - so lucky you can't buy it - lol

@annied Utterly gorgeous, but I'd hate to own it. Think of the cleaning, maintenance, heating/cooling bills etc, etc. But I'd love to be friendly with someone who did own it.

@annied @golftragic You have a point. I don't think my knee would cope with those stairs. I would have to get servants to do the maintenance and the cleaning though, have enough trouble with that here. Maybe in my next lifetime ha ha. I still think it is a beautiful house.
David would have trouble with that roof wouldn't he Annie. ha ha.

@onewing hahaha oh yes Babs that is one heck of a roof

@onewing Crikey, I hadn't even got to that bit. Given the state of my undercarriage there's no way I could even contemplate those stairs. Definitely need Downton Abbey's staff.

PS Speaking of Arnott's biscuits. If I remember correctly my Economics lecturer back in the early '60s telling we dumbos in the seats that 'Arnott's Biscuits were invading Victoria'. Apparently there was a quasi-legal, or more likely a 'gentlemen's' agreement that Victoria was Brockhoff's and Swallow and Ariel's territory, and Arnott's was NSW.

Beautiful house. Looks great in B&W.

Love the verandahs. I think it would have very high ceilings and be quite spacious inside.

It is very lovely

@pcoulson Thanks Peter. Know what you mean. This one isn't quite as grand as the one in Miss Fisher though. I love that house too, that one is in Parkville in Victoria. I love the old houses around that area of Melbourne.

@jackie8 Thanks Jackie. Nice house, not so good area. I'd live in it if it was somewhere else. There are a few houses of the same design scattered around Newcastle area. It was a popular design with the rich of the time.

@kathiecb Maybe in days gone by, but not now. More like a can of beer these days. Not such a rich area now.
