The historic former Earp Gillam Bond store building in Newcastle East was extensively damaged in the 1989 earthquake. It was saved from demolition after long public debate and eventually restored to its current glory.
Architect Frederick Menkens designed the building. He was born in 1855 in Olenburgh, Germany. He gained an Architectural diploma in Hanover in 1873 and then travelled extensively throughout Europe before arriving in Adelaide in 1878. By 1882 after first working in Melbourne, Sydney and Maitland he had settled in Newcastle where he became one of the district's leading architects. He died in 1910.
What a fantastic colour the building is and typical of the design of Australian buildings in that era. Shocked to hear about the earthquake, I had no idea that the area suffered them.
