Pigface by onewing

Pigface

I really must find out how this beautiful flower got the name pigface.

It grows wild all along the waterfront in pure sand and I am amazed just how hardy it is.

Gosh. I have never heard them called that before. This looks like Mesembryanthemum or Livingstone's Daisy

and a quick search on the Internet found this bit of info from http://www.apstas.com/iceplants.html

"The derogatory sounding common name for Carpobrotus plants derives from the perceived shape of the fruits, which to European eyes resembled a pig's face."

That seems an unkind word for these beautiful flowers! Lovely and bright on what is a cold wet day here.
