100 Strangers : No. 57 : Sean by phil_howcroft

100 Strangers : No. 57 : Sean

This is my second stranger from the Northampton Town versus Bolton Wanderers Football League One match at the weekend.

My first stranger from the game was Sue a programme seller. My second stranger is also a Programme seller too (I bet you could guess that from the photo). Meet Sean.

Sean was stood rather lonely in his "Programme Seller" booth on a corner of the ground.

I approached Sean and asked him if it was OK to take a photo of him for my project. Sean is a student and this was his third appearance at the Sixfields Stadium as a programme seller. Actually I don't know if the word "appearance" is what programme sellers do, it is what footballers do, however the word seems apt in this context.

Unlike Sue's shot, I have kept the booth in the shot as I think it helps tell the story.

After I'd took Seans photo he asked me if he could interest me in purchasing a matchday programme. I don't buy programmes any more (all the info tends to be online), so I turned down Sean;s request. I felt guilty doing so, but if I bought one it would have ended up collecting dust alongside the hundreds I have at home, in the loft, in cupboards, in wardrobes , in drawers !

Eagle eyed football supporters will notice Northampton Town's Matt Taylor on the front cover of the programme, a former Wanderer who got a warm reception from the 1200+ visiting Wanderers fans.

This picture is number 57 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page

I wonder if he gets paid according to the number of programmes he sells! You are doing well with the strangers!

Poor Sean -- he does look rather bored and dead-pan -- his face gives nothing away -- but you have captured this and as you said the booth does add an interest and explanation why he is there !

He does look rather lonely. (I think you should have bought a programme! Maybe before you took the shot!)

Another lovely portrait shot, Phil. Sean makes me understand he is new for the job and also for a portrait like this - he doesn't seem to be very relaxed. Love how he shows the programme and that you included the booth in this shot.

Ah, the self-consciousness of youth! He does look a little tense. Nice tonal work.
Well over halfway now? You're steaming through your project, Phil. Or maybe it's my rather squeezed-up temporal perception that makes it seem that way!
