This is my second stranger from the Nottingham Green Festival. Meet Hann, who had an information stall at the festival (stall number 36 actually). Her stall was providing information about the Alliance Workers’ Liberty (East Midlands)
The Alliance for Workers’ Liberty aims to build a movement which can replace capitalism, the current economic and social system based on class division and exploitation, with a new society based on consistent democracy, collective ownership and solidarity – socialism (I copied that bit from the Alliance website).
I told Hann I was an amateur photographer and asked if it was OK to photograph her for my strangers project. Hann said “Yes” without hesitation, but before I photographed her I asked Hann about her stall and aims. She was very enthusiastic about the cause and pointed me in the direction of some of the literature and publications on her stall. She offered me a copy of the current edition of the “Solidarity” paper at a reduced rate if I was unemployed (I didn’t ask if retired was applicable for a reduced rate). She also offered me some back issues for free, so I took a back issue.
As well as being a political activist, Hann is also an artist (from her Insta’ account), being creative with acrylics on reclaimed wood.
I photographed Hann sat by her stall. It was near a canopy of trees and one can get a green cast on some photos in those conditions. I did notice a few shots having that cast. I shot some photos with my vintage Jupiter 9 lens (I think Hann was impressed by that !!!) and some with my Sony RX100.
I showed Hann the photos and she said they were good, but thought she looked tired as he had been up very late the night before the festival.
I don’t do politics on social media, if I photograph a street stranger involved in politics, I let their image speak for them. I think it is good though that young people like Hann are motivated and passionate to have a voice in today’s society.
Her outfit and decorations are very recognisable - probably all round the world. We all know someone who wants to be seen like this. Good for her for having ambition!
Hann's expression is mesmerising! I very much appreciate your non-judgmental, factual approach to your strangers; Hann's bio is interesting and your portrait of her up to your usual high standard.
It's great that youngsters are prepared to stand up for their beliefs.
I think the political system that they advocate has been tried and ditched in recent history. However, I suppose the wheel has been re-invented many times!
She has a very distinctive look.
@dulciknit thanks Alison, good that you recognise my non judgemental approach to strangers. They let me photograph them, a great honour, it would be disrespectful of me to pass judgement on them. I do give a nod of appreciation and thanks though :)
