Another bitterly cold night with a very hard frost this morning, so this chap, the male of a mating pair who live in the field behind us, has garnered all of his flying skills and managed to flap over the 6 foot fence into the garden and is currently wandering around in the vicinity of the feeders sweeping up discarded food.
Males have rich chestnut, golden-brown and black markings on body and tail, with a dark green head and red face wattling. Females are mottled with paler brown and black. They were introduced to the UK long ago and more recent introductions have brought in a variety of races and breeds for sport shooting.
