I haven’t missed a Remembrance Service, since my first as a Cub Scout in Cyprus back in 1969 wherever I’ve been in the world. Last year, with the UK in a Covid-19 Lockdown, the service in Lincoln Cathedral was cancelled so I held my own, alone, by going to the Parish church of Spridlington and placing Poppies on each of the five HM Forces gravestones.
Today, Carole and I went to the service at Lincoln Cathdral and afterwards I picked up 10 of the 10,000 poppy petals that fell from the cathedral ceiling during the Last Post and took a detour on the way home back to the church in Spridlington to repeat my act of last year and placed two on each gravestone. It is my intention to do this every year going forward.
I’m not related to the five servicemen, I didn’t know them or even know their names this time last year, but they gave their tomorrows for our todays.
“When you go home, Tell them of us and say,
“For your tomorrow, We gave our today.”
Wonderful thing to do Phil. You’ve reminded me of a proud mum moment when I heard that our daughter, when she was at university in Portsmouth , stood in the pouring rain for 2 hours watching the anniversary of the D day landings. She said at the time that if all the servicemen could stand in the rain, then so could she.
