Aphid-killer

It was difficult to choose today. Not much going on in the campus garden, but when I looked closely, there were lots of critters in our back yard garden!

• Spotted Cucumber Beetles, “Diabrotica undecimpunctata,” http://bugguide.net/node/view/456

• Unidentified jumping spider (family Salticidae) having a late lunch, http://bugguide.net/node/view/715584

• lots of Multicolored Asian Lady Beetles (“Harmonia axyridis,” http://bugguide.net/node/view/397

• Several of these larvae — “Harmonia axyridis,” http://bugguide.net/node/view/397 — on chrysanthemum leaves.

So, yes, this scary-looking larva will become a lady beetle (ladybug)! I hope I’m not too far “out there” tagging this for the scary theme! Taken with two close-up filters attached, I’m fairly certain: +4 and +2.

Note. It was actually the pupa of this species that I removed-and-disposed from a plant leaf in the garden earlier this year. I learned later that it would have become a generally beneficial garden citizen that would likely feast on aphids. It was that incident that made me determined to identify the visitors and residents of our garden and last year’s flower photographer became this year’s bug-guy…

@espyetta Didn't post it for today (obviously), but I had a pretty decent "circle-of-life" spider capture today: ( http://bugguide.net/node/view/715584. This one was good enough (I hope), for identification at bugguide.net!
