Nectar on my glasses? by rhoing

Nectar on my glasses?

Went rowing on the lake again today and when I rested for a water break, this butterfly visited. Here it’s perched on the end of my Clic glasses (where I’m pretty sure it’s not going to find anything sweet!).

I’m pretty sure this will turn out to be an “American Snout” (“Libytheana carinenta”). I photographed one of these in our yard yesterday, but I didn’t have my long lens and the shots with the macro lens weren’t good enough to post. But this shot was so close that even my P&S was up to the task for a post-able image!

Confirmed at BAMONA as “Libytheana carinenta” or “American Snout”; http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/sighting_details/979208

From BAMONA’s species page — http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Libytheana-carinenta
“The Nymphalidae are members of the Superfamily Papilionoidea, the true butterflies. Distributed worldwide, butterflies of this family are especially rich in the tropics. They are highly variable, and there are more species in this family than in any other. Adults vary in size from small to large, and their front legs are reduced, unable to be used for walking. Wing shape is also highly variable… Browns, oranges, yellows, and blacks are frequent colors, while iridescent colors such as purples and blues are rare. Adults of some groups are the longest-lived butterflies, surviving 6-11 months. Adult feeding behavior depends on the species, where some groups primarily seek flower nectar while others only feed on sap flows, rotting fruit, dung, or animal carcasses. Males exhibit perching and patrolling behaviors when seeking mates. … Brushfoots overwinter as larvae or adults.”

@digitalrn Thanks for the morning chuckle, Rick! I am *almost* caught up posting my own images and then I hope that 365 will be a retirement priority and I will have time to comment again! Thanks for being a faithful visitor!!
