Today was our long hike. According to the Park Service's information — https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/upload/South_Kaibab_Trail.pdf — it's a 3-mile hike from the South Kaibab Trail Head to Skeleton Point, with a 2,040-foot loss of elevation … so it was a 3-mile, 2,040-foot climb back to the trail head at the top.
Here you can see the Colorado River, at center. The green area in the bottom of the canyon surrounds the Bright Angel Creek; this is where Phantom Ranch is located. I'm intrigued by the hike down to the bottom and back up. I think I'd want to descend on this trail and come back up on the Bright Angel Trail, so this would be a 17-mile trip down-and-up, with a 4,780-foot loss-and-gain of elevation. Probably not a same-day endeavor for me.
