This is our front yard. We have little control over it because we live in an HOA. They say what we can have and they also hire the landscape service that maintains it. We have a severe drought and the water has to be cut, so the lawn is dying. The HOA is FINALLY allowing drought tolerant landscaping. So watch the transformation.
Oh my! My mother lived in an HOA too. They can be really strict about these things. Living in the countryside, I have a well. But, with our low amount of rainfall this year, I'd rather not risk running the well dry to water the grass. Used dishwater works well for most plants, depending on the dish soap you use. My grandmothers even used their washing machine water for the veggie garden. Raising families during the Great Depression meant repurposing absolutely everything.
That is a really a good thing Debbie, so much can be changed to have a lovely garden throughout the whole year, rain or no rain. We have a HOA and most of our gardens on the estate have gone that way too.
The man who cuts my lawn was here last week. I told him I had thought about a no-mow yard earlier in the spring and decided my neighbors would shoot me. He looked at me rather askance, too.
I had to google HOA as I have not heard of it. Hope the drought breaks soon. I got my camera out for our first rain in months last night! We are still in drought, but at least some rainfall has finally come. I wish the same for you.
@jamibann@casablanca Our Home Owners’ Association is run by a board, elected by us. They make all decisions about our Community Center. One member leads the architectural review committee. The ARC has to approve all changes to the front yards and they also handle any disputes with the company that maintains our front yards. Right now the ARC is also at the mercy of the weather and our cities utility company and the state that are setting the rules for watering because of our severe drought.
After buying this house and dealing with the HOA here (and their lack of management skills even when we elect them) as well as seeing how the town ducks out on providing us with things non-hoa residents have (like leaf pick up), I would never buy in an hoa again. It sounds like yours is better than most though.
@olivetreeann We have an on-site rep to contact that is hired by the Board, not the landscape company, who handles all the yard complaints, so they get corrected pretty quickly.
