old glory #1

my city has quite a number of old buildings that have been designated as 'heritage' buildings. once in a while whenever time and/or opportunity warrant, i will feature some of them on my album.

today, on our drive around the city, partner brought me to this complex where he makes deliveries at least once a week. this complex is called the 'toronto carpet mfg. co. limited'. the whole complex was built sometime between 1899 and 1920 and comprises eight buildings on a 4-acre, one-city-block site, are of heavy timber construction with load-bearing brick walls, wooden columns and beams, and hardwood floors. they are now used for different purposes such as loft offices for different high end companies.

there is a restaurant, closed on the sunday, called "caFfino" and partner now has plans of going there for one of our future dinners. the offerings are exquisite and the prices reasonable so we shall see how they fare to my discerning palate. yes, terry, they have chocolate cakes for dessert.

if you are so inclined and have the time, there's a really cool read on the carpet company's 'rules and regulations' from that era: http://www.trainweb.org/oldtimetrains/industrial/history/toronto_carpet.htm

thank you kindly for your views and comments; know that they are much appreciated.

Wow! They sure don't build them like they used to! Funny...my little hometown (Dalton) is, or used to be, the Carpet Capital of the World" ...Di grew up seeing so many "Dalton Carpet" signs..and both words have 6 letters. So now, when I see the word Carpet, I often think "Dalton" and have to check to see what word I am actually seeing. Cannot wait to see your different buildings in your area...

This is a beautiful building, in the summer the east wall (near Varsity Stadium) is a living wall of green vines. Have you been inside?

A lovely collage and I especially like your 'take' on the building in the main pic which really shows its grandeur.
