what household keeps a hundred-year old ocarina? obviously mine!
i rescued this baby fifteen years ago when partner and his sister were getting rid of their mother's 'hoards'.
this was to go to the auctioneer and i didn't even know what it was at the time. i don't know, but some stuff in that house seemed to tell me they wanted to be remembered and taken care of. to partner and his relatives this thing didn't mean anything. but when i brought it home, my then teenaged nephew, who was into anime, readily recognized it as an ancient ocarina. when he held it in his hands, i could see he wanted to covet it. he tested it and i was surprised it was even making a sound. i hang on to it, one of the few souvenirs from mother-in-law's house.
then i forgot about it. middle of last week, i was frantic looking for this and couldn't find it. i thought it would be a good companion to an "oboe" which i went about looking for one at the music store. but, too bad, the oboe was kind of a specialized instrument. i did eventually find one but the price was $1,799 and the store i went to wouldn't even let me photograph it. so on saturday night, instead of getting ready for my trip to niagara falls for my meet up with ann lefevre, i spent so much time and turned my back room inside out. then i found this ocarina. how cool is that, eh? i was going to have this for the 31st but i thought i'd have it sooner and i will have a different post more appropriate for hallowe'en.
too bad! i wish i knew how to make a movie playing "twinkle twinkle little star" with this. wouldn't that make a cool post?
this is a two-fer. tagging this for the five plus two's anatomy theme.
thank you, folks, for your kind visits and comments; know that they are truly appreciated.
@bobfoto - thank you, jason. this is a little bit on the heavy side. i think it is one of those that was made out of an animal horn but i couldn't be sure. it still makes perfect music.
@lesip - no, i wasn't afraid. this is the only photo that turned out well but i did have some with me actually blowing on it. i had cleaned it a long time ago and i've used it a few times. thank you, leslie.
@bill_fe - oh, billy, if you meant your index finger/ear photo, can i tell you it really creeps me out, i couldn't stand it? it just gave me the heebie-jeebies. i don't know why. i just had to look at something else i couldn't leave a comment.
as for the mundane index finger challenge, i don't think this meets the criteria, which is that "There can be no question that the item in the challenge is the star". the ocarina is the star in the picture, and my very kissable lips :-P and definitely not my index fingers.
by the way, your ordeal's not over yet. it's like the energizer bunny - it keeps going and going and going and going and going! :-)
@summerfield You weren't the only one to say it is creepy. I get it about the item needs to be the star, I forgot about that part of it. There's an ocarina in the picture? I only saw your lips!
@bill_fe - yeah, i can see us three marching to the sewer with that song. btw, your creepy finger post can also qualify for the weekly theme absurdism because let's face it, it's just right there in the middle of absurdity. eeeek! i can't even get to any of your posts because it's in your default album. :-P
Oh that is so beautiful! I can only imagine that t has a beautifully aged tone to it as well! Have you never made a little video? Surely you have some sort of movie-making software on your computer... I'd love to lean over your shoulder and do it for you! ...and yes, Yellow Submarine would be quite perfect!
@summerfield Maybe it's going to keep on going until it passes me. People either like and laugh at my index shot, or they say it's creepy and or scary. I printed it and got the same reactions here at work.
@claireuk - aww! you're so sweet. thank you, my good friend claire. i understand. mwah!
@bobfoto - i sort of banged it against the sink last night and it had a metal sound. i was thinking porcelain but too heavy for that, too! thank you, jason.
@Weezilou - no, no video! hahaha! and certainly not yellow submarine. twinkle twinkle little star is all i can play on it. thank you, louise.
@grammyn - hahahaha! no, not at all. thank you, katy.
Will have to see if I can find someone playing one on YouTube. I'd like to hear how it sounds. Good shot for O! Glad it didn't make you late for our meet-up though!
