pears by summerfield

pears

i'm debating what to do with these pears. on the one hand i want to try and poach them with red wine (which i have never done before), and on the other, i can just eat them raw, no fuss, no sweat. but it's a pity if i don't try the poach option since i have time on my hands. i haven't seen the ground in three consecutive days. this is not the longest that i've been cooped up at home, last week i definitely was home for four consecutive days, with a brief sojourn to the recycling bins downstairs at the back. i'm getting tired of the cloudy view of downtown toronto; i'm no longer interested in photographing it unless it burns, which is very unlikely. in other words, i am bored to death.

now, on the third week, things are looking grim. on monday we were told that we are to take a pay cut, effective immediately; we don't know if it's temporary or not. or when things get better if the present pay will be reinstated. grim news indeed for those who have young families and have mortgages to pay. at a friend's firm people were laid off today, those people just worked overtime during the weekend. i have a friend who also lives alone and is getting stressed and depressed; he's a germophobic so he's not left his apartment since the mayor declared businesses to lock down. there's so much uncertainties and there are no clear solutions. aren't we glad we have 365 for a diversion from all the chaos!

there are people who believe that this will pass soon, especially that summer is forthcoming. that was the mistaken belief during the 1918 flu epidemic which started in the spring and lasted for two years. it is unbelievable that we are able to send people to outerspace and yet we cannot conquer diseases like cancer and obviously unprepared for a pandemic. this came so sudden a lot of us cannot cope with the new reality. both sociable and loner people, rich and poor, are getting tired and depressed with the situation.

i'm going to eat a pear right now. 🥴😜

i think i'm hosting another challenge, i forgot which one. does anyone know?

my roses photo is a finalist for this month's monthly theme. but i cannot vote because the other 5 are all my friends, and i love all their photos, i could not bring myself to choose one.
You could bake a tarte with these lovely pears, even it you already ate one ;-)

@ludwigsdiana took the words right outta my mouth, more accurately off my keyboard. Do you have any blue cheese? Goes well with pear on a tart.

Hold tight Vikki, this too shall pass.

Well one thing we know -- the pears are beautifully photographed so they served a noble purpose. And with five, you can eat each a different way. I think I have become like your friend --- I haven't left the house in 18 days nor had anyone come into my house.

So did you poach them?

I love ''pears with a noble purpose'' and yes beautifully photographed. For me, pears are best pickled!

Oh yes - poached with red wine - the way to go!

Oh Vikki, I wish I could phone you to natter and fill a unit of your time.

Pears should be cooked- poached, red wine or sugar water, roasted, raw they are gritty and slimy and gritty.

Your photo could have been inspired by Tessa Traeger, a clue to your challenge??

Best wishes

Well we can only go out if we are going to grocery or drug store. Trying to be positive and appreciate all the amazing things people are doing for each other. And all the companies dropping everything to make respirators and masks. I’m so sorry about your salary being cut, I hope that helps the company stay open and everything will be okay when the quarantine ends. We will get through this, it’s just not going to be quick. If you have any pears left do poach them. Poached pears are amazing.

Lovely image Vikki. Poached or raw with be fine by me. I'm glad we are still able to go outside for a walk and essential travel (food, medical & compassionate). Hang in there Vikki, it make a while but this will eventually pass.

love the simplicity of this image. I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food, Smile and keep safe

Hi Vikki!!! You described your confinement very accurately and I find it suits my condition on the other part of the ocean... Boredom and lack of action... Photographically speaking, I decided to explore objects in the house and use close ups...With some friends (mainly on Facebook) I launched a friendly contest of GUESS WHAT IT IS and all sort of interpretations have been produced, including yours. Yes, 365 helps us to pass the time...
Those beautiful pears go very well with mature cheese...

those pears are just perfect for photographing and so they have already done you a good service. With the remainder, I vote to poach. Preferably with cinnamon sticks as well as red wine. They will keep then for when ever you fancy one and there is nothing worse than an over ripe pear. As for the description of your feelings and situation in isolation, and the comparison with the 1918 flu epidemic, it is remarkable how so many of us on 365, find ourselves in similar situations the world over. So sorry to hear of your personal loss, and that of your friends and colleagues. When it starts to effect us and our friends, then it really hits home as real. Stick through this with us all dear friend.

Eat each one differently. This is a lovely food based still life.

you've captured those pears beautifully! i'm so sorry to hear about the pay cut... there's been so much of that lately... all the grim news - day in and day out... so hard to find things to take joy in these days...

You have photographed these pears splendidly! They look delicious. I like how you captured the character of the glass dish as well. Fav

Hang in there friend!! We will get through this eventually. Might I suggest you start a photo book. I use Shutterfly. It can take hours and also feed your creative needs at the same time!! It sits on line and you can purchase when you have the funds. Want to FaceTime at some point?? I can walk you down to our beach for a different view?? Email me if you do: kwindle@shaw.ca
