five keystones by summerfield

five keystones

not to be confused with ketones :-)

a keystone is the wedge-shaped stone piece at the apex of a masonry vault or arch, which is the final piece placed during construction and locks all the stones into position, allowing the arch to bear weight. this makes a keystone very important structurally. although a masonry arch or vault cannot be self-supporting until the keystone is placed, the keystone experiences the least stress due to its position at the apex. - wikipedia

i almost got stymied with my numbers. i was hoping to get a shot of a building with columns so i could tie it with 'fifth column'. such buildings are a-plenty in downtown toronto, however, it is quite difficult to get a clear shot due to vehicle and human traffic. people are funny. either they try to avoid or they don't want to be photographed and some would just stand right in front of the camera.

the other problem is the columns are either in 2's, 4's or 6's or more, but never an odd number. so i had to settle with the keystones of this old building located in a sidestreet in the downtown core. it is the same building where the lamp in my posting of february 16 http://365project.org/summerfield/365/2012-02-16 is located.

thank you for your views and comments; know that they are much appreciated. i shall make my way now to your albums.

Love your FIVE! Very impressive and beautiful. Great piece of architecture and love your color tones. I love the old buildings and bridges that have keystones. Always reminds me of Greek or Roman structures. Your taking such an artistic approach to your numbers ...very beautiful and very creative. Which doesn't surprise me one bit! I took a peek at that "lamp" in your previous capture and STILL love that photo.
