six windows by summerfield

six windows

this is the façade of an old building officially listed as 83 yonge street, one of the oldest buildings in the heart of downtown toronto. called "the tin and copper smith" building, it is a three-storey building originally built in 1857; additions were made in 1895 and alterations and repairs were done in 1910 and 1914. it is now dwarfed by other taller structures and skyscrapers. the ground floor is occupied by a dollar store. however, the building is listed as 'heritage' property by the city of toronto.

i should do some research on these old buildings when i retire. they are quite interesting; it is heartbreaking that some of them had to be demolished for structural safety reasons and most have been refurbished and made into commercial establishments, a mcdonald or hero burger shops.

thank you for your views and kind comments; they are mucho appreciated.

if you are so inclined, here's another photo from today's sojourn: http://365project.org/summerfield/365-again/2012-07-14

A beautiful six ... they don't make buildings like this anymore. Wouldn't this one have great stories to tell. Beautiful architecture ..love those windows. It would be nice if these could be restored into loft apartments or condos. Such charm. Lovely photo ... love it alot.

I like the classic feel of these old buildings- like an old man who wears a nice smelling after shave. Great 6! Looking forward to seeing how the week finishes out.

wonderful capture of a beautiful building - sad to think it is now being used as a dollar store but at least it is not being torn down. you achieved great details in your shot - the textures of the bricks really stand out.

@karenann - thank you, karenann. there are some old buildings here, like factories that are structurally sound and had been transformed into (expensive) lofts, especially those that are in or near downtown toronto. some privately owned buildings are used as offices and obviously taken care of.

@alia_801 - thank you, alia. the original had the dollar store in there, too, but the sign was a neon red and it would've taken away from the building so i cropped it just under the old sign.

@catsmeowb - hehehe! the great details are courtesy of ribbet HDR-ish, then crossed process it slightly. the afternoon sun was quite bright and it makes all shots funny. thank you, camille.

I'm a big fan of old architecture. Hate to say the old expression, but I think it holds perfectly sound in architeture "They don't build them like they used to." Great composition, lighting and texture for this shot. I'm really liking your number theme. I might try it someday.
