I took the time to sit quietly for a few minutes and my patience was rewarded. It's not possible to see from this picture that this a female because you can't tell that there's no red on the back of it's neck. You'll just have to take my word for it because this was the best picture.
A wonderful capture of a gorgeous woodpecker I never knew the difference between the male and female of this species -- something new to learn every day on 365 !!
