This is a juvenile woodpecker. Only juveniles have red on the top of their head. I've seen the adults feeding young up in the trees but haven't managed to get a photo. I guess this one has learnt to feed itself. Sadly we think the resident sparrow hawk got one of the young as there were woodpecker feathers all over the lawn.
A great shot, Sue! And interesting information. We have similar looking woodpeckers (downy woodpeckers and hairy woodpeckers), but only the males have a patch of red and it is a little further back on the head. Sorry to hear that the sparrow hawk got one of the young ones :-(
