A long way from both Australia and Chicago, we're now on Beaver Island to close down for the season...most of the leaves are down (I missed autumn while enjoying summer in Australia) and it was a challenge just getting to the house with a hard and heavy tree across Bonners Landing Road - the only way into our spot.
Still have many Australia photos to post -- thanks so much for all your visits, comments, and favs on my shot of the Adelaide Arcade, and the fun response to the domestically-challenged pelican couple!
Love it! Check out my Lake MI pic I just posted, you'll probably recognize this view - it's on Empire bluff looking down at the lake. :-) Stay warm up there!
@espyetta I guess it's a phrase that is used up here. "Closing down" means cleaning up and getting it ready to have all water and electricity shut off. Emptying refrigerator, packing away staples in plastic containers, cleaning the cabin, etc. Then, when we leave to head back to Chicago, someone comes in and drains all the pipes so that they'll be okay in the freeze to come. And then the house just sits here, lonely and sad, until we return at the end of May to 'open it up' for the summer/fall. We have to do this because it is so cold here and we don't have heating sources except for baseboard heat (when not here to keep the wood burning stove going), and that is SO expensive to run that it's not affordable for the few times we might be able to come up and use the house. It's also costly to get the road plowed throughout the winter. So, it's winterized but we're just too far away now to make use of it in the winter time. We did when we taught at MSU as it was just a 3 hour drive to catch the flight over. Once we moved to Chicago, it became a summer into fall only possibility.
Fantastic collage and it tells such a great story. We could do with Chainsaw Jim around here we have lots of logs in need of chopping ready for next winter. We have a chainsaw, but it is a bit hot at the moment to do the job.
Great fun cutting down trees, but not much fun if it prevents you going where you need to go! Hope you were able to use the wood for the fire? Love your collage.
And it's Jim to the rescue. You had the important task of recording the event. Happy you didn't miss the colours. Just no need to hurt your neck looking up.
We just did that with our cottage. But the tree that fell was about 10x the size! We just cut it in chunks and left it to the side of the road to deal with in the spring. ;)
Great collage Taffy, you still have some pretty autumn colour there. Technically, it's still spring here for another month but we had 38C two days ago so it sure feels like summer! Looks like time for a nice glass of wine at the end of that day.
telling shots!
