Time for a quick post from tonight's photo op hosted by @rosiekerr (who also loaned me her tripod so I could take this shot -- note to self...foolish to travel without tripod). Fun fact: arch is as tall as it is wide - 630 feet in each direction (doesn't look it, though). A tribute to Thomas Jefferson's vision of westward expansion. Groundbreaking in 1959, completed in 1965. Now a national park. An iconic image of St Louis, Missouri, USA. And one very impressive and exciting monument!
Great night shot of the arch! I saw it once on a hot day when people were waiting to get on the train cars to travel the inside of the arch.(that didn't seem too appealing to me).
Good to see a different city from your perspective Taffy. The arch definitely looks taller than its width. Is it much warmer in St Louis? That must be a nice change for you.
Oh I'm terribly envious! I'd love to return one day! Ken and I watched this going up while we were in college...everyone joked about "what would happen if it didn't meet when they got to the top!" It's quite a view from up there, but a ride to the top is not for those with claustrophobia!
Super shot! The only shot I have taken of it so far was in the middle of a blisteringly hot (102 degree) summer day whilst my husband and son waited(feigning patience) under the shade of a tree! I am sure your shot today is going to be from the Basilica, and am looking forward to it
@Weezilou how cool that you were there 'back then'! @rosiekerr said you two had gone to Wash U. She took me by there so I could see it. So many more St Louis shots to process and post!! I loved the city -- so many interesting areas.
@taffy Yes, both of us were at WU, met, graduated and married in St Louis. Beautiful campus, isn't it? If you got some photos there, I'd love to see them! And how about that proximity to Forest Park? The zoo...the museums...so many memories (including walking all the way down to the art school on freezing winter days...not EVERY memory is all that fabulous!)
Did you take a ride to the top? As much as I'm afraid of heights, I took the car up and enjoyed looking out over the city. This was quite some time ago- I'd have even better pictures of it now with my T3i. Ahhhh- such is life. fav
@olivetreeann It's actually closed at the moment for renovation. BUT if it had been open, I don't know that I could have done it -- less the height but more claustrophobic and it looks really tight. How exciting that you did this! And I know what you mean -- so many photos I'd like to re-do now (or take for the first time) knowing what I know now...
@taffy It is small but the "pods" are nicely lit and there's a narrative that plays as you ascend, so it makes the time go by rather quickly. Since my friend who I was visiting gets motion sickness quite easily I was the only one who went to the top. I rode up with a really nice family. The younger son was so talkative! They had to keep shoooshing him so we could hear the info on the tape!
