Watching the antics of the birds as they compete for the nuts in this bird-feeder is very entertaing. The clever ones learn quickly to dive down into the feeder - even when it's nearly empty - and make off with a whole nut to the nearest tree-branch, where they grasp it between their claws and peck away at it.
This one amused me, as the nut fell from his beak as he prepared to fly off with his booty. He didn't go hungry for long though as he quickly flew down after it and ate it on the ground. (Another photo of the tits feeding in my 365 album today)
Great capture, bokah and color.. as the nut falls through the air.
The birds are beautiful! They look similar to the US Eastern Bluebird; what are they?
I had to look these lovely thing up, on Wikipedia. They're Cyanistes caeruleus. Interestingly, just as the American Cardinal gets its's red pigmentation from its diet, these get their yellow from their diet. They are Eurasian in range, so "they don't grow over here," but they are in the same family as Chickadees and Titmice (two of my favorite local birds!)
Thanks for sharing - I've never seen or heard of these charmers before!
