I’m not one for getting ahead of myself, so I may have not already mentioned this summer that Billy & David (Dill’s Family) would be our traveling companions for the coming months here in Europe. They’re familiar with the region and invited us to join them on their annual retreat. We’ve only been to the Mediterranean once, so nearly everything will be as new, and we were happy to follow any of their suggestions. Thus, we find ourselves in the town of Vico Equence, with a view to Mt Vesuvius from our balcony on a 5th floor flat. On this day, we walked to the train station to go to Sorrento as our jumping-off place for the day. Perhaps the strangest thing I feel is to be walking from one place to another, often sharing a narrow street with cars, busses and other people…all in such close proximity! How different one city is from another…Lunenburg…Fountain Valley…Chicago…and now the streets of Italy! But I digress… Enjoyed waking around Sorrento awhile before the bus left to go down the coastline, hugging the cliffside, squeezing past other busses, scooters slipping past between it all… Harrowing for a foreigner to watch! Our destination was the town of Amalfi built on a hillside overlooking the water. We spent the afternoon walking through the narrow streets, enjoying the shop windows and all that looks so different to our eyes. In the town square we climbed the long flight of steps to a lovely church (that contains a relic, the head of St Andrew). While in town we enjoyed a pizza and beer and walked to the pier where I took this photo of Billy, Ken and David, looking back at a part of Amalfi. The weather is mild and quite pleasant. The ride back north to Sorrento had a view to the sun setting, and even from the bus window, I got a nice photo or two. We bought some groceries from a small store (as compared to a super market) and carried them back by train and on foot to our little flat. Billy made up a plate of assorted cheeses, olives & salami to have with wine and Italian beer, before a cup of homemade vegetable soup to top off the meal. We’re enjoying this simplified lifestyle, but I can see, surrounded by companionship, there’s little time for the computer at the end of the day. My postcard to 365 would be, “Having a wonderful time! Thinking of you; wish you were here!”
@skt In Sorrento there’s a nice store with a dauchound (spell check is no help with this wordf!) logo…of course, yes, I got to photo I’ll send you someday! (Later, in Capri, I saw the same logo in a small size in the children’s store)
@Ellen E I think of you with every passing pigeon! I’ve gotten several nice photos of them in assorted places…
@andiejaye Your note was so sweet…thanks for such a kind thought. As you can see, all’s well…I’m just overtaken with busy-ness! I don’t know that I’ll work backward to fill in everyday, but hope to leave enough in the days ahead to let everyone know we’re well and having a wonderful time. Hope school’s going well for you and g’s room is looking cuter everyday!
@miranda How very sweet of you to leave that nice note. I was a regular contributor until just recently, but you’ll see what’s taken me away for the present. It pains me that I’m not going to be able to get to your photos in return for now, but wanted to thank you and know you’ll understand!
So many of you come to mind but I can’t recall the “@” name I need to use here in most all cases. Will try to snag some of those along the way of only to write in this fashion when time allows. Ciao!
(Tue, 11-09_While, like all of us, I love hearing from you and receiving comments, I can see my computer time is going to be very abbreviated. I’m writing offline & will drop by an Internet Café to upload to 365 before going off for more sightseeing. Even I am amazed how little spare time I have when the days are full. You’d laugh to know how often I think of one and another of you, but for the present I won’t be commenting on 365. Sorry to have to stick this on every picture for awhile, but I want you to know why you haven’t heard from me!)
BTW - Check Ken's e-mail. I just sent Tamara's e-mail addy to you.
Great shot - HI Guys!
So glad to hear that you are loving every bit of Italy so far. Please limit your time updating us to rainy days. Don't miss out on one bit of your time there! Miss you!
