Today Ken suggested we take some photos of the interior of this historic town landmark that I've photographed before from out front http://365project.org/Weezilou/365/2010-05-29 We've taken tours with a docent in the past, so I've heard the remarkable history several times. Still, tonight I came across a video that I found both stunning and chilling http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=l6nBvqz9UwY Before telling the history of the starry ceiling above the alter, it shows the night that the church burned down and how it was brought back to life in 2005.
We had purchased our home in August 2001, and the morning of November 1st, friends called us in California to tell us that St John's had burned down on the windy Halloween night before. As a centerpiece in town, and the second oldest church in all of Canada, the ruins had hardly cooled before it was decided to rebuild, which they did. What could be salvaged was reused, and artisans used their skills to remake it identically to what had stood since 1753. You can't walk through this church without a sense of wonder and appreciation for the exquisite craftsmanship.
If you're looking closely at the photo, you might notice the dory up front on the right. In answer to the question I also asked, it's there to be filled with food for the Thanksgiving Food Bank, Thanksgiving in Canada coming next Monday, October 10th.
So beautiful. love to visit churches and no time or on the road I try to take a picture through the window...but not always do they turn out ok.
for a while I've been thinking of posting a series of churches we saw while on our travels.
What a beautiful church! It's wonderful that it was rebuilt faithful to the original. I'm glad you mentioned the dory, because it was the first thing I noticed in the shot and was wondering about it!
I cannot believe how well it was all remastered. They did a fantastic job with the entire structure, unbelievable. I can imagine how the local people must have felt on that dreadful night to see such a beautiful piece of history go up in flames.
This is a beautiful photo and an awe inspiring story of the rebuild with such meticulous attention to every original detail. As a lover of the sky and all things astronomy, the story of the mysterious stars is simply wonderful. Kudos to all who were involved in this amazing rebuilding and restoration project!
beautiful i love how you captured the lights. Thanks for your comments about the magic monkeys, i'm getting fed up with this conversation about the PP over & over...
I am so happy they rebuilt this beautiful place. This is a very inspiring photo with so many angles and color and light. I love it. Thank you for sharing and for the information.
The church interior is spectacular and you've captured it beautifully. I had no idea what a dory was, but after reading the comments I am assuming it's boat. I was so caught up in the big picture that I didn't notice the dory until people commented on it. Haha - we all seen things differently, yes?
What a fantastic story about the stars. I just love the meaning they discovered and the recreation of the exact pattern over 200 years ago. This is such a beautiful sharp image. I can see so much detail from your wide angle lens. So well captured. Just love it.
What a great story about the stars & the whole history of the church. I looked at all the videos - just so interesting. Thank you so much for sharing that. The workmanship involved in the rebuilding is amazing.
