The Petwood Hotel

The Petwood Hotel is probably one of Lincolnshire's finer country hotels. It has a lot of history though, as it served as the RAF Officer's Mess & in particular the officers of 617 Squadron (Dambusters) - though quite why I am not sure, as this is some way away from Scampton where Lancaster Bomber Planes were stationed.....
looks surreal with the spitfire and black and white beams

What a great photo - love that the plane is calmly sitting in their front garden....

The juxtaposition of that plane in front of the hotel is really eye-catching! Good shot!

Interesting information. The Dambusters of 617 Squadron were at RAF Scampton during the dambuster raids in 1943 and the King went to the Officer's Mess to see them afterwards to congratulate them. 617 was formed at RAF Scampton. I

I think Guy Gibson's gang of Dambusters had their local at The Black Bull in Welton. We used to go there when we were at Scampton.

The Petwood Hotel was the Officers Mess of 97 and 619 Squadrons from Woodhall Spa and 617 squadron went there after the dambuster raids.

think the Petwood Hotel is just cashing in on the 'Dambusters' part of the squadron even though they weren't actually at Woodhall Spa at that time.

@onewing Carole and I were only saying that Woodhall to Scampton was a very long drive in 1943/44 so couldn’t get why it would be the mess. Thank you

It looks a popular event/venue.

@onewing I thought there was an Officers Mess at Scampton, unless that was the Sgts Mess?

@carole_sandford The Officers Mess at Scampton was built in 1936 and I think now Scampton has closed it is getting a bit political. There are plans to try and make it a National Treasure to thwart plans to turn it into a camp for asylum seekers. The plot thickens!
