....and here comes a chopper to chop off your head!
From the children's nursery rhyme "Oranges and Lemons". Quite gruesome for children really! Early versions apparently didn't include these last two lines, could it be our Victorian ancestors changing things for their own enjoyment, as they were want to do!
It was dark before I had a chance to pick my camera up today, so hope this illuminating subject will suffice.
Many thanks for your continued visits to my project.
Yes some of those nursery rhymes were gruesome and frightening for little children but this is a beautiful lit candle in the dark ! - Time for candle lights and cosy evenings in front of the fire / telly again the days are really getting short with long dark evenings !
Super shot. A lot of nursery rhymes weren't designed for children originally, they were political satire of the time in some cases, for instance Georgie Porgie and The Grand Old Duke of York etc. Don't know the origin of Oranges and Lemons though.
@onewing when I looked it up, no one seems sure of its origins. There was a reference to Henry viii, but the last two sentences were’nt added til way after his time!
Beautiful shot of the candle - fav! Wasn't it good though in the olden days when things didn't have to be SO politically correct and you weren't offending anyone by speaking out loud!
I don't remember Oranges and Lemons, and certainly not those disturbing lines. I can see why they were later omitted, as are many things these days because they are not politically correct. Nice candle light.
I remember playing "Oranges and Lemons" in the school playground including the "chopper" bit :)
