2018 May Half and Half Challenge

April 19th, 2018
Last year I hosted the first May Half and Half Challenge. It was a lot of fun and so many people participated that I thought it would be good to bring the challenge back again this year.

What is a Half and Half photo?
Think parallel lines and how they join together and the patterns that are made. A half and half photo is one image that has captured two different scenes within the photo. For example the sand and the sea, a footpath and grass, a display of apples and oranges etc. The common link is that there is a strong parallel line running through the image.

The Instagram Half and Half project will provide you with lots of ideas on the type of half and half photos you can capture - https://www.instagram.com/half_and_half_project/

You can also view the month of collage images from the 2017 participants - https://365project.org/discuss/general/29875/thank-you-may-half-and-halfers

Last year I set myself a different weekly theme. I found it useful to keep me focused and it got me out of the house looking for subjects. My weekly themes last year were:

1. Water
2. Shoes
3. Reflections
4. Solid objects (one half of the photo was a solid object, the other half more fluid)
5. Urban landscapes

Other participants focused on nature, fruit and vegetables, colour combinations, doors and windows, buildings, and people. Once you start thinking in half and half images you see them everywhere.

A tip is to crop your photos square so think about your composition when taking your photos. Another tip is to start looking for half and half photos now and posting during the month of May. You don't need to take a new photo each day to participate in this challenge.

If you would like to participate in the challenge, you can do one day, one week or the whole month, it is up to you. Please use the tag is Mayhalf18

April 19th, 2018

Hi Nicole,
Clare and Taffy pointed this challenge out to me. Sounds very inviting to me and I'll be happy to join. Thanks for this new look into my photo life ;-)

@chikadnz @stimuloog - it is a really fun challenge and I am so glad you are going to join in. I look forward to seeing your photos next month.
April 27th, 2018
Is there an easy way to get the photo exactly half and half so the lines 'line up' when the images are all together in a collage or calendar? I've been doing it by eye, but wondered if there was a more accurate way.
April 27th, 2018
@chikadnz - if you edit them to square format they should line up in the calendar. I normally do it by eye as well and try to get the line in the centre of the image.
April 28th, 2018
This sounds great, count me in too please!
April 30th, 2018
@carolbird - welcome to the challenge :)
May 1st, 2018
Looks like fun. I will maybe try to do some if I can find them.
May 1st, 2018
Hi Nicole, I will join the fun, I don't know for how long but we'll see.
May 1st, 2018
I have a question on the half and half. Is the post supposed to be one photo or can it be a diptych?
May 2nd, 2018
@henrir - it is one photo, the challenge is to find two different parts of the scene that create one image. Have a look at the links above to see some images that might help you.
May 2nd, 2018
@jacqbb - welcome to the challenge and have fun
May 2nd, 2018
