Last year I hosted the first May Half and Half Challenge. It was a lot of fun and so many people participated that I thought it would be good to bring the challenge back again this year.
What is a Half and Half photo?
Think parallel lines and how they join together and the patterns that are made. A half and half photo is one image that has captured two different scenes within the photo. For example the sand and the sea, a footpath and grass, a display of apples and oranges etc. The common link is that there is a strong parallel line running through the image.
Last year I set myself a different weekly theme. I found it useful to keep me focused and it got me out of the house looking for subjects. My weekly themes last year were:
1. Water
2. Shoes
3. Reflections
4. Solid objects (one half of the photo was a solid object, the other half more fluid)
5. Urban landscapes
Other participants focused on nature, fruit and vegetables, colour combinations, doors and windows, buildings, and people. Once you start thinking in half and half images you see them everywhere.
A tip is to crop your photos square so think about your composition when taking your photos. Another tip is to start looking for half and half photos now and posting during the month of May. You don't need to take a new photo each day to participate in this challenge.
If you would like to participate in the challenge, you can do one day, one week or the whole month, it is up to you. Please use the tag is Mayhalf18
well i would certainly like to do this again - thanks for the heads up nicole :) and you're so right, that once you're into the challenge, you find half and half images everywhere! in fact mr g and i were on holiday for half of may last year, and he was seeing them too ...
@nicolecampbell Thanks for hosting this again ...I thoroughly enjoyed it last year and plan to give it a go again this year. It revolutionized the way that I look at my compositions.
@nicolecampbell I really enjoyed this challenge last year, thanks for suggesting it again Nicole. I'll probably do random shots throughout the month when I see them, which I discovered last year can be anywhere :)
Hi Nicole,
Clare and Taffy pointed this challenge out to me. Sounds very inviting to me and I'll be happy to join. Thanks for this new look into my photo life ;-)
Is there an easy way to get the photo exactly half and half so the lines 'line up' when the images are all together in a collage or calendar? I've been doing it by eye, but wondered if there was a more accurate way.
@chikadnz - if you edit them to square format they should line up in the calendar. I normally do it by eye as well and try to get the line in the centre of the image.
@henrir - it is one photo, the challenge is to find two different parts of the scene that create one image. Have a look at the links above to see some images that might help you.
@nicolecampbell Didn't see this last year, but saw someone's post for it and came upon an idea I posted today. I need to pay more attention to this "idea"! Thanks for bringing it back this year!
I am so excited that you are all joining in the challenge this year. Thank you for participating with me x
Thanks so much for hosting it again Nicole. I loved last year and am in for this year - I need something to keep me focused.
I like the idea of your weekly themes, but might just let myself be free! Cannot wait!
