16th December 2021

1 year, 257 days since the start of the 1st lock down in March 2020

The big day has arrived - amazingly there have been no government announcements that would affect the evening so we’re going for it. I spent the day pottering as I was rather nervous about how well it would go and what the buffet would be like.

I was planning to get there at about quarter to six but actually we were there a little after five to dress the tables with more red napkins, put out the quiz envelopes and shiny cups with their signs. Basically I had finished in less than half an hour!

Some of the committee started arranging at about 6.30pm and despite a slightly different table of guests than planned, it as an excellent evening. I had expected 32 people but only 29 turned up - the other 3 did not bother contacting me.

I need not have worried about the food - the chef excelled himself and the need very rare beef was some of the best I have ever eaten - apparently the vegetarian option of individual Brie, cranberry and mushroom Wellingtons were also very good. So much food that people could go up twice and then an array of desserts from miniature Christmas puds with a vat of custard, creme brulee cheesecake, profiteroles and velvet cake to name but a few... and a cheeseboard. All of this was topped off with mince pies, cream and coffee.

The onto the serious part of the evening - the awards of the cups which I also had to step in and photograph. This actually went much quicker than anticipated so as people had been working on the quiz during the evening we could go straight to my answers. I am pleased that my hard work paid off and apparently the quiz was quite difficult. Only two contentious questions, one of which I allowed two answers and the other I had to make a ruling that my answer was the correct one! There was a table of winners by just one point so they were awarded individual little bags of gold coins, a lens cloth and a photo badge - classy.

Eventually everyone left by just after 10.30 and I think everyone had a good time. Rather worryingly a couple of people suggested that I should ‘save the date’ at Fulwell for a repeat performance next year!!
