Bright red rose hips are a nice accent in the winter garden. Sadly, this year, I have very few of them due to a severe pruning I gave this big unruly bush in the fall.
@koalagardens My smaller rose bushes I will cut back a bit in the fall just to trim them down and make them less likely to get broken branches in the wind and ice during winter. Then in he spring I cut them back to get rid of wood that has died in the winter and reshape them if they need it. This one is different because it is Rose Eglantine a large sprawling shrub with long thorny branches and a very vigorous grower. I do some pruning spring and fall but usually don't take too much in fall because I like to have the bright red hips during the winter. This year the bush had just become way too big and was taking over that whole corner of the garden and I was quite ruthless with my pruning so lost most of the hips.
