There has been a church on this site for 1300 years & was primarily known as Wilfreds Church. St Wilfred was Bishop of Hexham when he died & my father who came from the area was named after him.
The present Abbey was built around 1170 AD.
It is a beautiful Abbey & my old auntie loved this place & was one of the friends of Hexham Abbey on a rota showing visitors round.
Hexham bowling green is in the foreground.
I thought it was a bowls green when I first saw this image, beautiful shot this Pat, my eyes were all over the place, lots to take in. Thanks for the info. too.
@cleanfreak That bowling green is in the grounds of the Abbey & it is so beautiful Carole it must be a fantastic place to play . I used to play Crown Green bowls when we lived at the other farm....it is very popular round here !
@happypat I think crown green is played more in the north of the country, I don't know of anywhere here that plays, but my Husband and I do have an occasional roll-up, I think it will be something we do when we retire, but a few years to go yet.
It just doesn't get any more gorgeous than this!! Love the greens and the historic architecture. What a glorious country you live in, Pat. Makes me wish that we could have spent another year there. Just could not see it all in three years .... how gorgeous this is.
