Fundraising Evening. by happypat

Fundraising Evening.

Last nights ladies NFU meeting raised £1200 for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust.
Our local vet died last year from a brain tumour & his widow gave a talk for this fund raising event.

Although he was only 51 when he died Mark was one of the older people to suffer from this terrible thing & unfortunately it is mostly children & young people who get brain tumours.

The charity is sponsored by Jonny Wilkinson, Dawn French & of course Tom Day.
What a wonderful photo for such a great cause, Pat. I love it when "locals" get together and do this ... means so very much to the family especially!

What a great total Pat!! Adam had a bone infection when he was two and we spent a week in hospital mixed in with the children's oncology ward (normally they're completely separate but their ward was being renovated). There was an 8 month old being treated for a brain tumour and how her parents were coping I have absolutely no idea - it's a terrible thing and a very good cause you were busy working for. Good job ladies NFU!

I was surprised how much was raised as there were only about 5o ladies there but a very worthy cause I agree !! Must have been a very worrying time for you when Adam was ill so good to see him playing sport now !

@happypat Well as it happened my best friend from Lark Hill and her family had come up from London for Sunday lunch when he stopped using his arm properly. She's a radiologist and insisted that they go home early and Nigel take Adam to A&E. A junior doctor sent them away and she told us to go back again the next night at which time Nigel told the junior doctor why he had come back and they were sent to more senior paediatricians who were fantastic -the treatment was very quick and effective. If we'd left it to get established it could have been a different story - they watch for deformity of the growth plate for a long time afterwards. The oncology ward was heart-breaking - so stressful seeing such poorly children but as it happens I met a nurse from oncology at a dog-training class and she said I wouldn't recognise it as in the last 13 years huge strides have been made in survival rates. Great news.

Well thank the Lord for friends like that !!! We are so frightened of being a nuisance that I think perhaps hang on too long before going to a doctor so so good to get proper informed advice ! You have to really push sometimes for a diagnosis so it really made a difference in the recovery period for Adam & sounds like no further implications ! I used to nurse at Blackpool Vic before I married & always remember the children's ward & no parents allowed to stay in those days so a pretty fraught place for sick children ! So much can be done now a days but but still heart breaking to have a sick child !

@judithg I don't seem to have used the reply button on either of my replies to you but you know they are for you !!!

@happypat Well you were a proper angel Pat! Nigel's mum launched a campaign in Stafford to have parents stay with sick children after his brother was traumatised by a 2 week stay in hospital at the age of 3 - he stopped talking and alsorts. She was successful as well - you can't imagine it not happening now.

@judithg Well done Nigel's mum ..so necessary for the well being & quicker recovery of sick children !

@judithg @happypat I was in the hospital for a month when I was a year old in 1945 and I could tell you re how traumatic that was! So glad your friend guided you right and Adam has no sequellae. And Pat, great hot and great cause for sure

@sarah19 @fannyb The speakes & her late husband who died last September pledged to raise £10,000 for this charity. apparently if you pledge a large amount like that you can get to see the books & choose what area of help your money can go to. She was going to donate the money she had raised to getting early scans for children who had a possibility of having a tumour & for a quick diagnosis.

@jgpittenger So you remember that even now so must have been very traumatic being away from your mum at that age !! I have just been watching a very moving TV proramme tonight about Great Ormond Street which is a famous childrens hospital in London & it was so lovely to see the children had their parents with them the whole time !

It's a terrible thing, and I only found out last week a friend of mine is at home on Hospice, also dying from cancer, tumors in the brain and on her kidneys.
