Here is our new neighbour Sherry. She is 19 years old & has come to live in the field next to us for the summer.
Her owners Ann & David love this cow & fought DEFRA & the British Cattle Movement Society to keep her alive.
She was originally a suckler cow & when she got too old to have calves she breached the 30 months rule that says all cattle going for slaughter had to be younger than that. It means that when she dies she will have to be just taken away or buried with no monetary value.
You might think that is an obvious outcome but if every cow was left to die of old age on a farm it would be chaos ......she is a very lucky cow!!!
Lucky Sherry, out to pasture. She deserves some quality field time. She is beautiful, I love cows, I'd like to have neighbours like that. Lovely shot, the tones in the grasses are so similar to her hide :)
@cleanfreak She is very pale isn't she Carole, rather pretty I think & she is in very good condition for her age I think! I love cows too, we used to have 110 jersey cows when we milked 3 years ago, real characters they were too !
This photo brings back childhood memories for me. Our neighbour kept an assortment of animals in the field behind our house including a Jersey cow, called Daisy of course. Sometimes I had a ride on her boney back and when I think about it now I can smell her lovely smell that came onto my hand when I stroked her.
@jmj No she hasn't been any where near Henry but he wouldn't mind as he thinks he is a cow!! Sherry lives on the same farm as Dolly, Henry's girlfriend.
She is gorgeous - looks like a gentle soul. I know nothing about cows, and am actually quite leery of them in close proximity, she looks like she could change my mind.
Sherry looks like a sweetheart...I'm so glad she was able to escape 'the axe' and spend the summer as your neighbor. Marvelous shot and wonderful story behind it.
