Young pheasant? by happypat

Young pheasant?

A bad photo but just curious to see if anyone knows the name of this young bird eating under our bird table this morning.
To me it looks like a young pheasant but do pheasants have red beaks?
The size of a large crow it was on it's own & we have never seen it before.
Would be interesting to know what others think!!

Taken through utility room window in the rain so poor focus I'm afraid!
I have just looked through my bird book ???? hope you find out .

Looks like a Red Legged Partridge to me Pat. We get them round us a lot. http://www.garden-birds.co.uk/birds/red-legged_partridge.htm

@happypat No problem. There is a little spot near me where I always slow down because they have a habit of running across the road!!

@maggiemae You're right maggiemae, wonder if they are called by different names in different countries? I do notice when people put names of different birds up here that they look the same as our birds but have a completely different name!

That would be right - reading the info on Sean's referral, they make a sound like, chukka, chukka chuff! Hence the name for the American bird! Isn't it great what we learn!

@maggiemae Yes definitely, 365 is a great place for learning all sorts!!!

I agree with Sean @seanoneill Had one a couple of years ago coming into my garden & with the aid of my bird book recognized it as a Red -legged Partridge

well whatever he is, it looks as though he was enjoying breakfast with you Pat - nice markings.

He's pretty cute...whoever he is

Bum! I was just going to say it was a red-legged partridge, but obviously a bit too slow off the mark

Neat having new visitors to your feeder.

@farmreporter Yes so good to see all these new birds arrive. We have started feeding Woodland Crumble on the ground which attracts the crows & rooks but also some different birds such as these.

Very interesting bird. I would love to put out bird feed again, but the Grackles have taken over and ran most of the small birds away, except for the Mockingbirds.

@grannysue Yes our small birds are being swamped by the very large ones a little bit, might have to give up putting seeds on the ground to discourage them.

Yes red legged partridge introduced to the UK from France. Most common in East Anglia. Wonder why he is on your feeder. Food must be sparse

@lucypics I looked on the map where these birds usually are & all down east side of the country not in lancashire ...will watch out for him tomorrow!

What an unusual looking bird! I would have said chicken. But am obviously not a farm girl.
