But as you see in this photo, urban decay in Berlin is no reason to let it sit abandoned, so what I find typically Berlin is the repurposing of old things to find new ways of making them useful, and the area now has a liveliness to it. There are flea markets, clubs, cafes, even an artsy bookstore and gallery. There's a roller skating rink, a rock climbing area, and the buzz of activity everywhere.
One of the things I like about this photo is that in addition to the skateboarder, you see on the left the shadows of the two who are waiting their turns at the top right, just beyond this photo's edge. I'm sitting in the beer garden just in front of all this.
Really nice! I really like the composition and action. I don't know if you do know, but I've heard through others that putting in the reference to someone in the photo description will not send a notice to that person, so you have to put it on the first comment line after you post. At least, that is what I was told when I tagged someone and they didn't get it--but did once I started making a quick comment under the photo. :)
@marie65 -- now that the winter-that-seemed-to-never-end has finally moved into spring, May has been a great month for wandering and biking. During the winter, I always had my hood up on my coat, and only looked downward to avoid slipping on the ice. Weather makes such a difference! @frankhymus -- the "find" was thanks for several Berlin-knowledgeable 365ers who came to my rescue when I called out for help in meeting my challenge! Thanks for the comment on the "freeze" of the skateboarder . . . I learned about AI Servo and setting my camera to multiple shots from @darylo and it sure has come in handy. @pflaume -- Thanks for your nice comment! I considered cropping a little closer but I realized how much I liked the shadows, too. @fishy -- as you can tell, I have been inspired by your challenge and learned what the definition of "urban decay" is! You'd be surprised how often I would find an example, only to find a brand new sign in the way, or something that seemed to fight with the concept. @lynnb -- thanks for the FAV! @darylo -- I heard that if I tagged them in the "tag" section then they'd see it -- is that true? Thanks for your nice comments! @synke -- I have YOU to thank for helping me find this image, and also for the list of other places to explore in the future. @steampowered -- thanks. I thought about cropping more but then I'd lose the shadows in the foreground. Any suggestions for making the skater stand out more?
@jyokota Hi Junko. Re making the skater boy stand out a little more I had a little play with selecting the factory walls and windows in the background and applying a very little blur to help isolate the foreground a bit. I also increased the saturation on the skater as well but apart from that, I couldn't come up with any ideas. Maybe @frankhymus has some other ideas?
@lynnb --let's do a check so I'll know in the future . . . @fishy, @synke, @dolphin, @bouvardpecuchet -- did you get notified that you were tagged in the "tags" section?
@taffy -- thanks very ,much for the comment AND the fav! The reason I chose the window one for the actual urban decay challenge was because I could pair it with this one, and you that for me, it's all about the narrative!
@steampowered -- I see what you mean. At first, I thought of doing the reverse of what I've done before in taking a very distracting person's clothing color and changing it altogether. But I only did that when it was someone in the background of a portrait I had taken, and not when that person is the focus.
@jyokota No I didn't. I found your photo because I went back and looked. If you tag in the photo commentary, the person tagged is not notified. You need to tag in the comments. All go though, I found both your challenge responses. I'm thrilled you seemed to go to so much trouble!
@jyokota yeah I think one gets not notified in the description part of the photo. Only in the comment part. However, I was curious to see where you ended up going so I came to look for your photos. Besides I am not that often checking 365 at the moment. Going through your photos really made me wanting to come back and participate more again ;) Yet, my computer is still broken and therefore no way to upload my photos at this point :(
I really like this shoot!! Especially the oblique line of the outstretched arms of the skater in contrast with the concave form of the roller skating ring! Good work! And even nice to be there with you at that sunny afternoon!;-)
