I left after awhile and went on, but two of the young guys in our group stayed for quite awhile. They reported that the squirrel finally got tired of cowering and stepped out and ran around as if to say, "let's get this over already!" But the hawk never moved. Maybe he was just exerting his power and not really hungry. So as far as we know the squirrel was safe.
