Red-headed Woodpecker by jyokota

Red-headed Woodpecker

I searched for this photo to tag Louann @louannwarren because she commented that my red-bellied woodpecker looked more like a red-headed (which is true, it has red on its head). But I hadn't ever posted this! Taken at a marsh on a birdwalk organized by @jbird57
Thank you! This woodpecker’s markings are so dramatic. There’s no question this one is a red head! The red bellied one has softer colors, wings and head. Wonderful 365 lesson today, thank you, Junko!

@louannwarren Oh, the things we learn from 365! I'm always learning new tidbits and interesting facts about the world. Thanks for your comment that made me go off in search of this one.

I know that the redbellied woodpecker was so named because the name redheaded was already taken and they do have a bit of red on the belly.

A good shot of a red headed is always good.

Gorgeous! love these red-headed woodpeckers and don't see them very often... we have red-bellied woodpeckers come to our feeders though.

Beautiful… haven’t seen one of these in our area but we frequently get the red bellied and downy woodpecker and infrequently see the pileated.

@louannwarren Well @joansmor has taught us something new, too!

Thank you all for your comments. Like some of you say, we get the red-bellied and the downy much more often and very occasionally we see this red-head and even more occasionally the pileated. Woodpeckers are so much fun see -- and I've been lucky enough to see some nests this year!
