An iconic picture from 1984. I remember it being on the front cover of the National Geographic magazine.
I don’t think the taking of this picture did her many favours, as in her culture she shouldn’t have met a man outside of her family or had her face uncovered. Evacuated to Italy as a refugee partly due to her prominent status followed some years later.
I bet it was an interesting exhibition.
@carole_sandford I remember it on the National Geographic cover too plus I have a book of his work with her on the cover. I agree that the photo didn’t do her any favours. It was an incredible exhibition.
One of my favorite photographs. It was interesting to read the follow up on this young woman. I read it a few years ago. It was in National Geographic and a number of newspapers carried the story as well.
