German settlers out of Pennsylvania brought the fun tradition of Candlesmas Day now called Groundhog Day to the United States. Not finding any hedgehogs they adopted the American Groundhog as their weather forecaster. His original name was Br'er Groundhog but was later changed to Punxsutawney Phil after King Phillip. Groundhogs are the largest species in the squirrel family.
